That's right, I've extended my trip to St. Louis; I am now returning to NYC on Tuesday. I have been busy visiting family and friends and, incidentally, seeing a few movies. The most interesting film I've seen in a while is Bug, a horror film from last year directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist) and starring Ashley Judd. Really creepy, with great writing and a slow, steady build that is ultimately very rewarding. I also saw I Am Legend and Walk Hard in the theaters, which seems somehow appropriate as I bask in the glow of Midwestern sensibilities. Both films were fine, and had moments worthy of praise, but I don't think either of them will stick with me for very long, and definitely would not be well-served by further discussion here. And alas, I have not been reading much of anything, even though I had intended to. Perhaps I will remedy that now...
(Oh, and I plan to provide a top-10 list [of course!] of the year's best films, and to at least mention a bunch of my favorite books read this year that I didn't mention in my upcoming Strange Horizons end-of-year blurb. All of this will hopefully happen when I return to the city. Hope everyone has a happy New Year celebration tomorrow [tonight?].)
